Mise-En-Scene Analysis
In the movie clip from “A Quiet Place”, the camera movement used is tilting to give a sympathetic feeling towards the characters who are walking very far with their three children. The use of the point of view shot when the father is running to save his child, creates more suspense to that very moment in which his son dies. Other camera movements used was zooming and tracking. They use these camera movements to show suspense towards the young boy who was killed by the monster. The costumes that the character was using rag clothes that has been worn for days or possibly hours. In the movie clip, noise/sound was priority because the prop was the thing that killed the young boy. There are a series of Non Verbal Communication (NVC) such as shock and fear on the Father and Mother’s face as the boy was about to get killed. There was also a facial expression of happiness in the young boy’s face as he was playing with his toy spaceship. The location/setting was also important in the movie clip because it was a dormant location in the forest, until the young boy made sound to attract the monster to their discreet location.

In the movie clip from Jurassic World, there are many different features of Mise-En-Scene. Many such as the props that are used, the Non Verbal Communication etc. In the first few seconds of the clip, we can see the people behind the computers are calling their boss to inform her of the situation at hand. We know she is the boss because gives the orders of getting the people out of the cage immediately. The connotations of the boss wearing the colour white, can be that she is pure of heart and that she is a good person. After the boss gives the order to get the people out of there, everybody has fear across their faces as they try to get out of the cage. In this movie clip props are used a lot to portray the realism of the situation they are in. For example, when the man got out of the cage, he went to go hide under a car that was parked. He cut one of the wires to cover himself in gasoline to cover his scent of a human so the dinosaur would avoid him.
Rush Hour 3: Carter vs The Giant
It is set in a Dojo, which indicates that the people there are learning karate. When Carter opens the door, he finds a very tall man. There is a high angle shot indicating that Carter is inferior compared to the tall man. Since they are in a Dojo, the tall man is wearing a Karategi, which is traditional Karate Uniform. Because of this we can see he is very experience. The close up camera angle is used to portray the facial expressions of Detective Carter and Inspector Lee in the clip. |
|
Suicide Squad: Deadshot in Prison
Deadshot is dressed in an orange jumpsuit and the connotation of that can be that he is a prisoner. There is a long angle shot to show how many men are need to keep deadshot in his place. There was a point of view shot and a hand held camera movement. This camera movement and camera angle create a sense of realism when Deadshot is shooting at the targets with not even half his force. When Deadshot notices that the gun is real and not a bluff, he has excitement across his face which defines his emotions in that moment. Camera angles
Camera angles refer to how a scene is framed. Many different types of camera angles which are chosen by the media text producer, influenced by how the audience reads what they see. |
Rush Hour 3: Nun Scene
The close up camera angle which portrays fear in the bad guy when he experiences a near death experience. (Gun pointed his head for the second after the first fault in the gun). There are also signs of fear in the nun, when she also witnesses a murder/someone die in front of her eyes. With all the equipment(props) in the background such as Defibrillators, Surgical Table, etc we can see that it is set in a hospital. The use of the gun props gives a more real effect to their interrogation, causing fear and distress for the bad guy. |
Extreme Close Up
An extreme close up is when the camera focuses on the smallest aspects to show more detail. An extreme close up is usually used when focusing of the subject or focal point of the picture. The shot can be so zoomed in that only a specific detail of the subject can be see. For example the eye might have an extreme close up to emphasise the details in the eye like the colours. |
Two Shot
A two shot is used to establish that two characters are together in one scene. The subjects do not have to be next to each other, and there are many common two shots which have one subject at the front of the scene and the other subject in the background. This could connote the importance of the two characters or to make the characters look dominant together in that scene. |
Mid Shot
A mid shot is used when the camera focuses on a medium sized section of a person, usually focusing on areas from the head to the waist. The mid shot is used so that the audience can still be able to see most of the persons body. This can emphasise the body language of the characters for the audience to interpret and create their own opinions of them in that specific scene. |
Long Shot / Extreme Long Shot
A long shot is when the camera focuses on the whole of something from a further distance. An extreme long shot is a camera angle which shows a lot of information from far away. Usually used at a start of a film to give the audience an idea of where the movie is going to be set. E.g. In blue story, it started with a shot of South London to emphasise the setting. |
Point Of View
The point of View shot is usually understood by the term First Person. It is a short film scene that shows what the character is looking at. This gives the targeted audience the experience of being one of the characters in the scene. By doing this the audience would enjoy the interaction moment from the film scene. |
Single Camera Production
A Single Camera Production has many other names like Single Camera Mode, Portable Single Camera etc. This specific Cameras Production Method is used to save the producers time to get many different camera shots with different cameras. Using this method, you get all the camera angles with the same camera. This Single Camera Technique are often used in Documentaries, Comedies and Dramas. Despite the advantages, there are still many negatives with this method of Camera Production. It takes longer to set up. When you want to take a different shot, you have to change the camera into the perfect position for the specific shot. There is also lots of repetition as they will have to redo the scene if the camera is not in a good position. |
|
Multi Camera Production
This is a method of shooting tv programs and films with many cameras set up on set. They usually used in broadcast Football Games when they score a goal and show an instant replay from a different perspective. Using a Multi Camera Production can cover more angles of the video. You are able to see different reactions and emotions from significant angles which could be influential the targeted audience. But this can also bad impact on the directing crew. Having a Multi Camera Production will cost a large amount of money which could put a dent in the budget they have. It is hard to hide the camera from the other cameras in the scene. |
|
Sports Events
In the Men's 1500m World Cup 2018, they used Multi Camera Production to broadcast the sport to the audience. They constantly use change the camera angle. To give different perspectives of they way they are running. It also gives us a clear view of all the Athletes' faces and to see their number and what country they are representing. |
|
TV Drama
For the TV Drama I chose Stranger Things. In this Stranger Things clip it uses a Multi Camera Production to emphasize the facial expressions on the character's faces. It also has many different shots such as Over the Shoulder, Two shot, Mid shot, Close Up etc. When using Multi Camera Production it makes it much easier to get all the clips and put it together for the final product. |
|
Music Video
For this Music Video I am using Okay Go's song 'Upside Down & Inside Out'. In this music video they use a Single Camera Production. They do this to create a sense of creativity for the targeted audience. It also shows that they had to be very consistent when performing the stunts they did in the zero gravity plane. |

Video Analysis
The video I will be analysing is the song 'Bad and Boujee' by the Migos. Throughout the whole video they kept one camera to directly record and look at when shooting. The single camera technique constantly changed the location of the music video for example, in the restaurant, on the street, a billboard and under a bridge. The camera constantly followed the artists in the music video to emphasise the artist that created the music. The camera angles also vary depending on what they are rapping about in the moment, for example when they are talking about Jewellery the camera will get a good angle on their Jewellery on their neck and wrist. They also often use a low angle shot instead of a high angle to show how powerful they are in the Hip Hop industry. |
|
|
The next video I will be analysing is a clip from the movie 'Now You See Me 2'. In this clip they are secretly hiding a device with them while they are being searched by security. This clip consists of many different camera angles which change the whole perspective as a whole. It equally shows both high and low angle shots the difficult situation they are currently in. With the high and low angle constantly changing in that scene, it creates a sense of tension and uneasiness for the audience. As they are being searched, the camera angles give the location of where they are. It is a modern facility that is heavily guarded by security.
|
In this YouTube Vlog by David Dobrik it is all recorded in a single camera production which makes it easier collect all the clips to edit into one single video. In this vlog, the location changes due to the production of adding all the clips together. It creates a sense of realism and a perspective for the targeted audience as they watch and feel like they are there in that specific moment. In the video there is a large amount of zooming, tilting, tracking etc which makes the video real for the targeted audience.
